Kitesurf in Brazil: top 10 spots, wind and water quality

Where to ride in Brazil, when the trade winds blow, and how to check water quality before you paddle out.

Brazil’s northeast coast runs on trade winds. From August to January the southeast trades blow 20 to 35 knots with a regularity you don’t find in Europe or the Caribbean, which is why Ceará has become a year-round kite destination. This guide ranks ten spots by three practical criteria: average wind in season, variety of water within 20 km, and gear rental and schools on site.

1. Cumbuco (Ceará)

Forty minutes from Fortaleza airport. Ocean swell on one side, flat-water lagoons (Banana, Cauípe) on the other, and river mouth flat at low tide. The default first stop in Brazil.

Season: August–January · Wind: 22–30 kn · Water: flat lagoons + 0.5–1.5 m swell

2. Ilha do Guajiru (Ceará)

A fishing village with a lagoon that behaves like a pool. Pure flat water — the place to land new tricks without swell punishment.

Season: August–January · Wind: 20–28 kn · Water: flat, tide dependent

3. Jericoacoara / Preá (Ceará)

Strong wind, dunes and the Paraíso lagoon nearby. Ride Preá rather than the main beach: same wind, fewer riders, lagoon access when the ocean is rough.

Season: August–January · Wind: 25–35 kn · Water: open ocean + flat lagoon

4. São Miguel do Gostoso (Rio Grande do Norte)

The RN wind arrives later, September to February. Real waves plus flat sections at high tide, with guesthouse prices below Jeri’s.

Season: September–February · Wind: 20–30 kn · Water: waves and river flat

5. Barra Grande (Piauí)

At the mouth of the Parnaíba delta: warm, shallow and glassy at high tide. Freestyle territory; access by 4×4 or buggy.

Season: August–December · Wind: 18–26 kn · Water: flat at high tide, shallow at low

6. Atins (Maranhão)

Between the Lençóis dunes and the Preguiças river. Big wind, milky water from sediment, kilometres of empty beach. Not a beginner spot — a silence spot.

Season: August–December · Wind: 20–28 kn · Water: flat to choppy, shallow

7. Taíba (Ceará)

A large shallow lagoon plus open ocean across the road. The best classroom in Ceará: stay in the lagoon all morning, ride waves when the wind drops.

Season: August–January · Wind: 20–28 kn · Water: flat lagoon + swell

8. Paracuru (Ceará)

Cross-shore wind and more consistent swell than Cumbuco, without Jeri’s crowd. The wave-riding pick.

Season: August–January · Wind: 22–30 kn · Water: open ocean with swell

9. Galinhos (Rio Grande do Norte)

A fishing village surrounded by salt flats, reached by boat. Shallow, steady, almost empty — you learn to read wind instead of following a queue.

Season: September–February · Wind: 18–26 kn · Water: flat and shallow

10. Canoa Quebrada (Ceará)

Cliffs, side-shore wind and a wide beach for rigging. Choppier than the lagoons, so it suits riders who already have autonomy.

Season: August–January · Wind: 22–32 kn · Water: open ocean, choppy

Season table

Destination Best months Water
Cumbuco, Guajiru, Jeri, Taíba, Paracuru, Canoa Aug–Jan flat lagoons + ocean
Gostoso, Galinhos Sep–Feb waves + river flat
Barra Grande, Atins Aug–Dec shallow flat

Ride without damaging the coast

Three rules matter: keep gear off restinga vegetation (it holds the dunes and takes decades to recover), stay out of river mouths and estuaries (nursery habitat, and manatee territory in Ceará), and avoid turtle nesting beaches from December to May. Before choosing a spot, check the weekly water-quality bulletin — after heavy rain, storm drains push contamination into the surf zone.

Safety checklist

  • Never ride alone at an unfamiliar beach; agree a return point with someone ashore.
  • Keep 50 m from the sand line — that zone belongs to people in the water without gear.
  • Check the tide: at Barra Grande and Guajiru low tide can drop under 50 cm.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen only (no oxybenzone).
